Summer Consultant Opportunity

The Health x Housing Lab is seeking a Consultant for a 10-week, part-time (15-20 hours per week) position for the summer of 2026. This is a paid position specifically for someone with recent lived experience of homelessness or housing insecurity. Through contributing their expertise from personal experience and in partnership with the Lab’s Summer Student Scholars, the Consultant will learn the basics of action-oriented research and help inform the work of the Health x Housing Lab. This position is based in New York City.

Health x Housing Lab Consultant Activities

The Consultant will provide key input on Health x Housing (HxH) Lab projects. The Consultant will work closely with the HxH Lab Summer Student Scholars (medical or graduate students), on projects related to health and housing and will engage in bidirectional learning with the Student Scholars. The Consultant will have opportunities for professional development related to understanding basic research and technical skills and the fundamentals of community engagement in an academic setting. However, please note this is not a job training program and linkages to other employment opportunities are not offered.

Specific activities will be developed in conjunction with the Consultant at the start of the position to meet both the needs of the HxH Lab as well as the interests of the Consultant. Activities are expected to include:

  • Developing a project with one or more Summer Student Scholars (small research project, an OpEd, a report, or another type of project) to be completed by the end of the summer.

  • Attending and participating in weekly one-hour HxH Lab team meetings.

  • Attending HxH Lab Advisory Committee meeting.

  • Planning assistance for HxH Lab educational events and seminars.

  • Contributing ideas for and assisting with ongoing HxH Lab projects.

  • Attending seminars and completing educational activities guided by HxH Lab faculty, which could include:

    • Seminars related to public health and population health, and the basics of conducting action-oriented research

  • Classes on research skills such as searching research literature .

  • Technical skills trainings such as Microsoft Excel or PowerPoint.

  • Educational materials on topics related to health and housing.

Dates and Details

The HxH Lab Summer Consultant will work part-time (15-20 hours per week) over 10 weeks from mid-June to August 2026; exact timing of the weeks is somewhat flexible. The hours are also flexible but should be in the weekday daytimes. This is a paid position. Please note if the candidate has specific concerns or restrictions around hourly salary related to benefits receipt (e.g., housing vouchers or other benefits), we can discuss on a case-by-case basis].

Our main office is in midtown Manhattan and the Consultant will work a hybrid schedule from the office and remotely. The Consultant will be expected to keep track of their work for the Lab each week and will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the 10 weeks. The Consultant will also be welcome to participate in regular research seminars offered via Zoom by the NYU School of Medicine Department of Population Health, as well as other research-related educational activities as described above.

Qualifications

Required qualifications:

  • Must have personal experience of homelessness or housing insecurity; individuals with current or recent experience of homelessness are especially invited to apply.

  • Must be able to commit to 10 consecutive weeks of part-time (15-20 hours/week) work to occur from mid-June through August 2026.

  • Proficiency in basic computer skills, including Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, internet navigation, email communication, and Zoom meeting. (equipment and assistance with software/technology will be loaned as needed).

  • Must be able to work during weekday business hours (e.g., Monday through Friday 9am to 5pm or 8am to 4pm, ET) and work on-site at least one day per week.
