We are seeking a postdoctoral fellow to join the Health x Housing Lab within the Department of Population Health at NYU Grossman School of Medicine for a one-year position (with a second year dependent on funding availability). The postdoctoral fellow will provide advanced-level research support for qualitative and quantitative studies, with particular emphasis on a community engaged qualitative research study examining transitions from homelessness to housing among adults aged 55 and older. They will also lead independent research projects aligned with the Lab’s values and research priorities. They will have an interest in pursuing mixed-methods research at the intersection of homelessness and health with a particular emphasis on community-engaged research. The postdoctoral fellow will be mentored by Dr. Giselle Routhier.
The postdoctoral fellow will be primarily involved in a community-engaged qualitative research study examining barriers and solutions for older homeless adults to rapidly exit shelter to housing, titled Improving Older Adults’ Transitions from Homelessness to Home (OATH). This study is being conducted by the co-director of the Health x Housing Lab (PI: Giselle Routhier, PhD, MSW). The primary aims of this study are to:
Aim 1: Examine pathways from shelter to housing for older homeless adults, including identifying housing-specific needs, health and service-related needs, and barriers and facilitators to rapidly exiting homelessness.
Aim 2: Build capacity for community-engaged research at the intersection of health and housing that centers the voices of people with lived experience and leverages the collective strengths of academia, community-based organizations, and people with lived experience to identify, implement, and advocate for solutions to homelessness among older adults.
The postdoctoral fellow will engage in all elements of research, from design through dissemination. The fellow will collaborate with community and academic partners on research; conduct qualitative and statistical analyses independently; publish first-authored manuscripts; and disseminate research through conference presentations, policy reports, and other outlets. The postdoctoral fellow will also assist with grant applications and, ultimately, prepare an application for independent research funding.
Education and Career Development
The goal of the postdoctoral fellow program is to help develop the next generation of faculty leaders in research at the intersection of health with homelessness and housing. The NYU Grossman School of Medicine offers excellent opportunities for learning and professional growth. The Department of Population Health works toward the twin goals of improving health for all and reducing health inequities between groups, embracing four core strategies: engaging communities, turning information into insight, transforming healthcare, and shaping policy. The Department of Population Health hosts multiple seminars each week spanning diverse topics in population health and research methods. All postdoctoral fellows have Individualized Development Plans made in conjunction with their mentors. The Health x Housing Lab postdoctoral fellow will also have the opportunity to participate in professional development workshops and networking/social activities offered in the Department of Population Health.
